Admiralty Bay
Admiralty Bay is an important bay on the south coast of King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica. With a width of around 8 kilometers and a length of 16 kilometers, it stretches between Demay Point and Martins Head and cuts deep into the island. Wikipedia
Due to its sheltered location and relatively ice-free conditions, Admiralty Bay is home to several research stations. The permanently manned stations include the Polish Henryk Arctowski Station and the Brazilian Comandante Ferraz Station. The Peruvian Machu Picchu Station and the US Captain Pieter J. Lenie Station are operated seasonally. Wikipedia
The area surrounding the bay is of particular ecological interest. It is protected by the Antarctic Treaty as “Antarctic Special Administrative Region No. 1”. Part of the west coast is occupied by the specially protected area no. 128, which is designated as Important Bird Area AQ046 by BirdLife International. Adélie penguins, gentoo penguins and chinstrap penguins breed here. Wikipedia
Admiralty Bay is not only a center of scientific research, but also an example of international cooperation in the Antarctic. The stations located here contribute significantly to the understanding of the Antarctic ecosystem and global climate change.
