Alter do Chao
The port of Alter do Chão is located on the right bank of the Tapajós River in the Brazilian state of Pará and is a popular port of call for cruise ships exploring the Amazon region. Alter do Chão, often referred to as the “Caribbean of the Amazon”, is known for its white sandy beaches and the clear fresh water of the river.
Cruise ships usually anchor off the coast, as the harbor is not deep enough even for larger ships. Passengers are taken to the shore by tender boats, which allows direct access to the sights. The city offers a variety of attractions, including the famous “Ilha do Amor” (Island of Love), a sandbank that appears when the water level is low and can be reached by small boats. The surrounding area is characterized by lush vegetation, clear waters and abundant wildlife, making it an ideal place for ecotourism.
For excursions in the area, there are boat trips to nearby communities and nature reserves, where visitors can get to know the local culture and the impressive flora and fauna of the Amazon region. Alter do Chão is also known for its annual “Festival dos Botos”, a traditional festival with music, dance and folkloric performances.
The port of Alter do Chão combines the natural beauty of the Amazon with cultural experiences and offers cruise guests an unforgettable adventure in one of Brazil's most fascinating regions.
